1. What is Thithi?

Thithi is calculated based on the positioning of the Sun and the Moon. Every 12-degree angular separation between the Sun and the Moon marks the completion of one Thithi.

There are a total of 30 Thithis in a lunar month, divided into two fortnights:

• Waxing Phase (Shukla Paksha): 15 Thithis from New Moon (Amavasya) to Full Moon (Pournami).

• Waning Phase (Krishna Paksha): 15 Thithis from Full Moon (Pournami) to New Moon (Amavasya).

Thus: 15 Shukla Paksha Thithis + 15 Krishna Paksha Thithis = 30 Thithis.

Why Should You Analyze Your Birth Thithi?

Among the five limbs of Panchangam, Thithi reveals the status and nature of relationships in one's life. It shows the relative positioning of the Sun and Moon at the moment of birth.

The Moon represents the mind, emotions, memory, and psychological state. The Sun represents soul strength (Atma Shakti), individuality, authority, and vital force. Thus, the birth Thithi reflects the interrelationship between the Sun and Moon.

When examining the birth Thithi in a horoscope, it is best to analyze: Moon's strength + Sun's strength + Their mutual relationship.

  • If the Moon is strong, the mindset remains clear, calm, and stable.
  • If the Moon is afflicted, it can bring mental confusion and emotional imbalance.
  • Similarly, the strength and position of the Sun help determine individuality and soul power.

Karma, Pitru Debt & The Meaning of Relationships

No matter how much wealth or assets one possesses in life, living has little meaning if supportive relationships are missing during critical times.

In astrology, the Sun is Pitru Karaka (significator of father/lineage) and the Moon is Matru Karaka (significator of mother/emotions). We take birth according to our Poorva Punya Karma, and Thithi determines this karma balance.

This is why Thithi worship is given high priority in temples. Ancestors are revered on Amavasya days when the Sun and Moon align.

Understanding the importance of Thithi and performing appropriate temple worship helps ensure a harmonious life filled with loving relationships and free of obstacles.

Remedies & Temple Worship Methods

Remedies yield true results when performed with sincere devotion. Thithi remedies are most beneficial when done consistently over time rather than just once.

Performing heartfelt Pitru Tarpanam and ancestor worship on every monthly Amavasya is highly significant.

Specifically, Mahalaya Amavasya during the month of Purattasi in Dakshinayana is extraordinarily auspicious. Offering food (Annadhanam) along with water on this day brings immense merit.

  • Visiting ancient Shiva temples on your birth Thithi day and performing Annadhanam brings peace and prosperity.
  • In upcoming articles, we will explore specific temples that alleviate Thithi Dosham.
